What is TPU

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) hose has been increasing in popularity in recent years for its application in large diameter hoses. The smooth polyurethane finish of TPU hose achieves agility without sacrificing water flow capabilities. This collapsible supply hose is incredibly lightweight, eliminating additional weight issues caused by water pick up during use.

When to Use TPU

Supply hose made of thermoplastic polyurethane is extremely durable and resistant to chemicals and abrasions. This type of LDH is ideal for industrial settings due to its chemical resistance. Additionally, it performs well transferring water over great distances in rural settings, and can withstand being placed or pulled along any ground conditions without punctures. 

An added benefit of TPU hose is the extended service life of your supply line. TPU hose requires no drying time, and can be rolled back onto your reel straight after purging excess water. When kept in a coiled configuration, thermoplastic polyurethane hose can be expected to provide dependable service for up to 15 years

Downside to TPU

Although thermoplastic polyurethane creates a collapsible hose, it is harder to bend. This makes the LDH harder to flake, making TPU hose ideal for hose reels. It rolls onto a reel with ease, but can take up a bit more space on the reel than traditional rubber hose. Thermoplastic polyurethane can expand in high temperatures, so TPU hose is best used as a durable supply line rather than being close to the seat of the fire. Although it can reshape when cooled, the high temperatures expanding the TPU hose can affect flow rates and pressure negatively. 

Large diameter TPU hose isn’t necessary for every application, but can be extremely beneficial in the situations that need it. For unobstructed flows and extreme durability, TPU hose can offer a supply line that takes your crew further.
